Prevent Skin from Aging too Quickly

How do I keep my skin young and healthy?

Simple fact: as we get older our skin ages.

But certainly you have seen some people and been amazed at how young (or old) they can look when compared to their actual age.

There are two huge factors that increase the aging of your skin. One is tobacco smoke. Avoiding this is easy if you don't already smoke.  Your primary care doctor can help you quit if you do smoke. Quitting is not an easy process but definitely doable when you are mentally ready to quit.

The second major factor linked to premature aging of the skin is UV light. Sunlight damages our skin over time and speeds up the loss of collagen and elastin, important natural ingredients of the skin. Loss of these components leads to thinning of the skin, lines, wrinkles and loss of volume - premature aging.

In addition to avoiding UV light and smoke, everyone should get regular exercise and eat a well balanced diet rich in a variety of fruits, vegetables and other plants. These lifestyle factors keep your body and blood flow healthy which in turn is reflected in your skin appearance.

What other prevention regimen should I follow?

Every adult should wear a good broad spectrum sunscreen on the face daily. Limiting UV light damage will keep your skin healthy appearing for years to come.

Most facial plastic surgeons recommend starting injections of neuromuscular blockers early in a few key locations depending on your facial expression muscle activity. This is something that people in their 20s and 30s can start. Stopping these few muscles from being hyperactive keeps the skin in your face from constantly folding and thus helps limit the lines and wrinkles later on.

A daily topical antioxidant and brightening serum can be helpful and should be started in the 30s or earlier. Often people benefit from adding a low dose prescriptions tretinoin.  Tretinoin is used for acne but has also been shown to help with collagen levels within the skin, as well as reducing current lines and wrinkles.
